Ms. Ella screamed for help. With the assistance of other neighbours, Jane was rushed to the hospital.
There she was stabilized. However, the doctor requested to see Jane's guardian as a matter of urgency. He needed the approval to give Jane a blood transfusion.
But Aunt Uche wasn't reachable. By the time she picked up her calls, Jane was already in a critical condition. Aunt Uche rushed to the hospital, pretending to show concern.
When she got to the Doctor's office, she was asked if she knew that Jane had an abortion.
'No, doctor. I didn't know my niece could do such a thing'. She lied.
'Well, her condition is severe. She was 10 weeks pregnant and had an induced abortion. I believe an untrained personnel carried out the act. Because he didn't remove all the pregnancy tissue, causing severe hemorrhage.
I also diagnosed a uterine infection due to the invasive method he used.' Replied the Doctor.
'Ah, doctor, you are scaring me.' Screamed Aunt Uche. 'Will she be ok?
'It depends. She has lost a lot of blood and needs a blood transfusion immediately.
While they were still talking a nurse rushed in.
'Sir, please your attention is urgently needed'. Said the Nurse panting.
When they got to Jane's bedside, she was lifeless. The doctor couldn't feel her heartbeat. He shook his head.
'I'm sorry, but she's dead'. Mumbled the doctor.
Ms. Ella screamed, squeezing Aunt Uche's dress.
'You killed her! How could you? You're a devil'.
Everyone paused. Aunt Uche was shocked.
'Are you normal? What are you talking about? She asked Ms. Ella, confused.
'Jane told me everything. Your husband impregnated her and you made her have an abortion. You and your husband will rot in jail!
Ms. Ella dashed out to the police station. She gave an eyewitness account of Jane's ordeal and painful death.
While Aunt Uche and her husband were contemplating how to inform Mama Jane of her daughter's death. Three police officers stormed their house and arrested both of them. Fortunately, they had moved their kids to Uncle Okon's sister's house, who lived nearby.
Upon interrogation and coercion at the police station, both suspects confessed to the truth.
Jane's mother was called and fainted when she was informed of the cause of her daughter's death.
The quack doctor got wind of the happenings and ran away.
Aunt Uche and her husband kept trying to avoid trial. By trying to use their connections to get bail. But Ms. Ella wasn't backing out.
After much dragging, the case was tried in court. Jane's mum had traveled to Lagos to carry her daughter's corpse. And witness the trial.
With Ms. Ella's testimony and sufficient evidence, Aunt Uche and her husband were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
Sadly, through the powerful influence and connections Uncle Okon had in the military, he and his wife were granted bail and released secretly.
Today, Mama Jane still mourns the loss of her first child. The worse part is her own sister having a hand in Jane's death. A determined and hardworking girl who lost her life to sexual abuse. By family members, she had trusted.
While her killers relocated and roam freely on the streets of Calabar.
Ms. Ella blames herself every day for Ella's death.
'What if she had pushed further and made Jane talk the first day she was crying in her house. What if she had paid more attention, every time she saw Uncle Okon coming back home when only Jane was indoors?
What if she had challenged Aunt Uche to stop abusing Jane physically?
Maybe, Jane would still be alive.
She thought to herself, 'Indeed, it may not be very wise to always mind your business. Sometimes interfere. Especially when a vulnerable child is involved. You might just be saving a life before it's too late.
The End.
