3rd term exam timetable was out. Itopa didn't have to read. He would sit near his gang of friends. Especially Caleb. He was the smart one.

Rumors about the green wizards attacking his cult group had proved to be true. Saliu had beaten up one of their members' sister.

'She was rude to him', Saliu had said.

Itopa had a sworn duty to protect his members. He wasn't scared of his rivals. Including their leader, Izu. He would prove his title as scorpion

Mathematics was the first subject. But it wasn't business as usual. The invigilator, Mr. Kikile was a new staff member. He quickly changed Caleb's seat once he noticed their silent communication.

Itopa became furious. He tore his exam sheet and left the hall. And vowed to deal with Mr. Kikile.

That night, he and his trio attacked the man's house. Armed with knives and cutlasses, they nearly stabbed the elderly man and his wife to death.

Mr. Kikile had said, 'May you all not end well', as they left.

News of Mr. Kikile's attack got to the school authority. Itopas's classmates suspected him but no one could dare point a finger at him.

He and his close gang had written other papers without any disturbance. They cheated without fear.

It seemed that other teachers were afraid to challenge or punish them. They simply looked away. Obviously, they didn't want to end up like Mr. Kikile.

Geography was Itopa's last paper. It was a hot Thursday afternoon and exams were ongoing. The energy was high as the students could not wait to finish their last paper.

Suddenly, two gunshots were fired at Saliu. He died on the spot. In that instant, Itopa reached for his knife and was shot too. The green wizards had attacked.

The school turned upside down. Everyone was shouting and running for their lives. Before some police officers could arrive, the shooters had disappeared.

Itopa was rushed to a nearby hospital. He had sustained leg gunshots. Caleb and Ike had escaped over the school fence.

Upon investigation, the truth unfolded. The attackers were senior cultists who had graduated but came to defend their junior cultists.

The police officers found it hard to trace their identities. They had worn masks and came in through the fence. They all went into hiding after the incident.

Reports of Itopa and his gang's mischief got to the police.

Ike was caught and he narrated what had happened. He had gone against the school's code of conduct by joining a cult group. He was expelled.

Saliu's death pierced through his parent's souls. They had lost their only child.

Caleb's parents had thought it wise to relocate their son to the faraway east. But nemesis caught up with him. He was soon diagnosed with cancer of the lungs.

Itopa was in the hospital for one month. The gunshot affected a nerve in his leg. And had to be amputated. He was crippled for life.

Itopa's mother could not be consoled. It felt like her world was crumbling.

One day, as she lay beside him on the hospital bed, Itopa beckoned to her to come close. Thinking he wanted to tell her something, he bit her ears deeply.

While the mother shouted in pain, he said, 'You never taught me the right thing. You are a wicked mother'.

Mama Itopa couldn't process the thought of having her son hate her. The one she felt she had given her life for.

She tried holding on to him, crying. But Itopa forcefully pushed her away. She fell, hitting her head on the tiled floor in the process.

The nurses rushed in to find out what had happened. They were shocked to find Mama Itopa lying down unconscious. With blood gushing from her head…

The End.
